Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
